Lips, they should be luscious, are we right? The idea that plump lips only became a trend a few years ago is somewhat misguided. Sure, it was only recently that celebrities started showing up on social media with fuller, more voluptuous lips, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t want them long before that. What changed was not our admiration of and desire for full lips but our ability to make this goal a reality. Full lips aren’t just more youthful, they are characteristic. They add a vibe to the face that no other facial feature can. If you’ve been on the fence about lip fillers, we’ll fill you in on what you may need to know to take the next step.
How Lip Fillers Work
We use Restylane and Juvederm products for most of our lip enhancement treatments. Fat grafting is also an option, but not one that most patients choose right out of the gate. With lip fillers, we get to see what’s possible and how much enhancement looks the best before we make a decision that will permanently affect the lips.
Restylane and Juvederm are hyaluronic acid dermal fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide that the body makes naturally. It’s job is to moisten, lubricate, buffer, and plump various body parts, including the skin. It works by binding to water molecules. When we inject the lips with hyaluronic acid, we are drawing water into the area for increased fullness and contour. The effects of injections are immediate, allowing us to reach just the right amount of enhancement.
What do I need to know before getting lip fillers?
The most important point of consideration for any person interested in dermal fillers is to choose their provider wisely. Lip injections are not permanent and they are minimally invasive but they are still invasive. There are blood vessels in the lips that the provider must know how to avoid, and there are injection techniques that an experienced provider will have that can minimize discomfort. Taking time to select a fully qualified, board-certified nurse or doctor to perform lip injections can mean better results with fewer risks.
