Dr. Salzman uses the safest and most reliable methods to add fat to the butt. By using ultrasonic separation of fat into smaller individual cells and removing the fat with powered assisted cannulas, the fat has been shown to have a higher survival rate. The fat is filtered through a system that processes it in a way that allows only the good fat to be used. Fat is removed around the buttocks, hips, and thighs, and sometimes the abdomen. Dr. Salzman injects the fat into the butt while visualizing where it goes in real time using ultrasound. At present, there are only a handful of plastic surgeons in the US using this technology. Dr. Salzman now offers courses for other physicians to learn his technique. The Brazilian Butt Lift is done under general anesthesia in our AAAASF-accredited operating room. Like any aesthetic plastic surgery procedure, safety is our number one priority. Over the last several years, as the popularity of this procedure has increased dramatically, there has been an alarming increase in the mortality of this procedure.
It has been shown that if fat is injected into the muscle, it can gain access to the large veins traversing these muscles. This fat can then travel through the heart to the lungs where it can cause life-threatening problems. In our office, we have been using diagnostic ultrasound for 5 years for a myriad of techniques, including monitoring of the integrity of silicone breast implants. Since July of 2017, we have used ultrasound to visualize the position of the fat injection cannula to make sure that the injected fat goes only into the subcutaneous tissue and not into the muscle. This, we believe, makes this procedure far safer. Ultrasound also allows Dr. Salzman to see where additional fat can be placed to optimize its retention. We predict that, over the next few years, the use of ultrasound for Brazilian Butt Lifts will become the standard for improving the safety and reliability of this procedure
Recuperation and Healing
Patients leave wearing a dressing that consists of a large sponge that outlines the buttock area. This keeps pressure off of the newly injected fat and stays on for several days. The tiny incisions used to harvest the fat are closed with skin glue and are covered with a waterproof dressing. There is bruising and swelling, although most subsides in 2 weeks.
