What is Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery?

The Brazilian Butt Lift is a modern form of buttocks augmentation that eliminates the need for silicone implants that could shift or rupture. This technique of enhancing the shape and volume of the buttocks is an intricate process that involves harvesting fat, purifying fat cells, and depositing the purified cells in the appropriate layers of buttocks tissue.

Benefits of Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery

There are several reasons why the Brazilian Butt Lift is a popular plastic surgery procedure, including:

  • The body is enhanced without the use of foreign objects or substances.
  • Without silicone implants, there is no risk of buttocks shapeshifting or deflating.
  • The Brazilian Butt Lift requires only tiny incisions, so there is minimal scarring.
  • Fat is removed from an area of excess in the body, enhancing the overall figure.
  • The outcome of BBL surgery looks and feels natural because it is.

Fat Harvesting

Fat harvesting is achieved with Vaser power assisted liposuction. This initial step in the enhancement process is conducted through a small incision in an area of the body where there is fat to spare. Common areas include the thighs, abdomen, and back.

Depending on how much fat is available, more than one area may be used as a harvest site. During liposuction, fat is first gently separated into small parcels using the energy of ultrasound waves. The fat cells are then extracted using a small power-assisted hollow tube called a cannula. The fat that is removed is mixed with blood and other anesthesia fluids. Special processing using a “Red Head” device separates pure fat cells from other substances. These cells are living and can be deposited into another area of the body.

Fat Transfer

The fat transfer is achieved using a special syringe that injects fat cells into the subcutaneous tissue that sits above the muscle of the buttocks. Dr. Salzman uses artistic layering to build volume and shape that harmonizes with each patient’s body frame. Dr. Salzman is one of a few surgeons in the US with experience in placing fat cells into the buttock using ultrasound. It is well known that fat placed into the buttock muscles can migrate into the large veins of the buttock and travel to the lungs, where it can cause breathing problems. This is called a pulmonary embolus. These can be fatal. Using ultrasound guidance to place fat into the buttock safely allows for proper fat placement into the subcutaneous tissues, eliminating the risk of pulmonary embolus.

Ideal Candidates

Adults of all ages can benefit from Brazilian Butt Lift surgery if they are dissatisfied with the curves of their backside. The extent of enhancement varies from one person to another. One should not assume that a Brazilian Butt Lift will augment their backside to an extent that looks obvious and borderline unnatural. As we’ve seen throughout history, trends in body shape change. This is demonstrated in younger patients’ desire for more volume and more obvious contouring and in older patients’ desire for a gentler, more subtle lift and shape increase.

Butt Lift Surgery Results

Brazilian Butt Lift surgery doesn’t just increase the volume of the buttocks. The outcome of this procedure is an all-around improvement in body shape. Because fat is reduced near the buttocks, we achieve better contours across adjacent areas. Overall, patients who undergo a Brazilian Butt Lift can expect:

  • Restored or improved volume in the buttocks area
  • The appearance of elevated buttocks (less sagging)
  • Buttocks shape that harmonizes with the rest of the body

FAQs

Is Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery Painful?

BBL surgery includes two different techniques: liposuction and fat injections. The surgery is usually conducted with general anesthesia, which prevents the passage of pain signals to the brain. Patients do not experience any pain during their BBL procedure.

After a Brazilian Butt Lift, mild discomfort may be managed with prescription pain medication for a few days. Patients are often ready to transition to an over-the-counter pain reliever within the first week after their procedure.

Is Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery Safe?

The American Board of Cosmetic Surgery generally considers Brazilian Butt Lift safe. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, along with other plastic surgery associations, formed the Task Force for Safety in Gluteal Fat Grafting a few years ago to refine the safety guidelines for buttocks augmentation using fat transfer. It sounds simple to take fat from one area of the body and put it someplace else, especially the buttocks, seeing that this area is mostly fat. However, Brazilian Butt Lift surgery is complex and requires the specific training and experience that a plastic surgeon gets through extensive education.

What Are the Possible Side Effects of Brazilian Butt Lift Surgery?

The most common side effects of this procedure are bruising, swelling, and soreness. We provide patients with clear, detailed post-operative instructions to care for their transferred fat, incisions, and harvest area to avoid more serious complications.

How Long Does It Take for the Final Results of a BBL To Be Visible?

The final results of a BBL generally become visible about 3 to 6 months after the procedure.

At first, there will be some swelling, which gradually subsides over the first few weeks. The body also takes time to adjust to the fat transfer.

Once this healing process is complete, the full effects of the BBL will be more apparent, including the desired volume and contour.

How Long Do the Results of a BBL Last?

The longevity of BBL results largely depends on lifestyle factors and the patient’s body.

On average, the results can last several years. Many patients enjoy their enhanced shape for 10 years or more.

Maintaining a stable weight and living a healthy lifestyle can extend the results. However, significant weight fluctuations may affect the appearance over time.

Can I Combine a BBL With Other Cosmetic Procedures?

Yes, you can combine a BBL with other cosmetic procedures for a more comprehensive transformation. Many patients choose to undergo additional surgeries simultaneously, such as:

Combining procedures can optimize the overall body contour. It also reduces the total recovery time.

Will My Body Absorb Some of the Transferred Fat After Surgery?

It is normal for the body to absorb some of the transferred fat after a BBL. This absorption typically occurs within the first few months post-surgery.

About 60-80% of the transferred fat usually remains permanently. Patients must follow the post-surgery care instructions to ensure the best retention. This includes avoiding pressure on the treated area and following a healthy lifestyle.

Is a BBL Suitable for Patients With Low Body Fat?

A BBL may not be ideal for patients with very low body fat. This is because the procedure relies on the transfer of the patient’s own fat from areas like the abdomen or thighs.

Patients with low body fat may need to consider alternative procedures or gain some weight before the surgery. In some cases, other body contouring techniques, such as implants, may be discussed with the surgeon to achieve the desired outcome.

It’s vital to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Salzman to determine if a BBL is the right choice based on your body type and goals.

How Should I Sleep After a BBL To Ensure Optimal Results?

After a BBL, avoid putting pressure on your buttocks to ensure optimal results.

Sleep on your stomach or side for the first 4 to 6 weeks to prevent compressing the transferred fat. You can also use a special BBL pillow when sitting to keep weight off your buttocks.

Adjusting the way you sleep minimizes the risk of fat reabsorption. It also helps maintain the shape and volume of your new contours.

Why Choose Dr. Salzman For Butt Lift Surgery?

The demand for buttocks enhancement has increased in recent years, and surgeons who are not board-certified plastic surgeons have been performing this procedure. Dr. Salzman is a board-certified plastic surgeon and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at the University of Louisville. He not only performs the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure in a very particular manner (using ultrasound guidance), but he teaches other plastic surgeons how to perform this surgery safely and artistically. He has dedicated his career to his patients’ safety and satisfaction. The safety of this procedure is elevated with the knowledge of how much fat can be safely removed, where fat can be injected into the buttocks, how deep, and how much fat can be safely deposited.
