Ear Surgery (Otoplasty) in Louisville, Lexington, Kentucky

Procedure Description

Otoplasty (ear pinning) is done under a general laryngeal mask anesthetic or a local anesthetic with IV sedation in adults. Incisions are hidden behind the ear. The ear cartilage is reshaped, and sutures are placed to move the ear back towards the head. Children with prominent ears can have surgery beginning at age 6.

Recuperation and Healing

The sutures all dissolve on their own. We place a soft head dressing on the day of surgery. You may remove this dressing and shower in 2 days. An elastic strap is worn around the ears at night for 2 weeks while sleeping. Pain is easily controlled with oral medications. Swelling and bruising usually resolve in 7-10 days.

The specific risk and suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
