Change In Size
Sometimes, a change in size may be necessary for a breast implant. This could be because of weight loss, weight gain, childbirth, or a woman may decide that the current size isn’t right for her anymore.
Ruptured or Leaking Silicone Gel Implants
Breast implants are physical products like everything else and have a shelf life. Eventually, implants will degrade, and leaking or rupturing can happen. This is especially true for early generations of silicone gel implants that were made out of a thinner silicone shell with a less consistent fluid-like gel. These ruptured implants can deform the shape of the breast and will need to be replaced.
Capsular Contracture
When a breast implant is put into the body, a pocket of scar tissue will naturally form around it. This allows the implant to remain in place and respond similarly to natural tissue. However, this scar tissue can become hard and dense in rare circumstances. This is called capsular contracture and happens when the body produces an excess of scar tissue around the implant. Breast implant revision can be used to remove the excess scar tissue and allow the breast implant to act as intended. This is often called a capsulotomy or a capsulectomy in more extensive procedures.
