For Your Most Beautiful Summer, Start Non-Surgical Body Contouring Now

woman in a swimsuit with a perfect shape and line showing her body There are a few reasons why millions of adults start taking a more discerning look at their bodies around this time of year. One is that we’ve been conditioned to set goals at the beginning of every new year. Another is that summer is now on the horizon, albeit still months away. Then, we are also inundated with the idea of New Year, New You. We’re not about creating a whole new Self; we’re about bringing out all that is already inherently good and beautiful. In some cases, to do that means to shed some old baggage. We offer several ways to shed the baggage of unwanted fat, from liposuction and abdominoplasty to a few nonsurgical options. We’ll talk about these treatments here.

Nonsurgically, there are essentially three approaches that are taken to reduce body fat. These are heating, freezing, and chemical dissolution. Each of these methods takes a fair amount of time to achieve the desired outcome when compared to liposuction. For this reason, now is the best time to schedule your body contouring consultation so you can have the most beautiful summer.

Radiofrequency

Heat-based body contouring treatments generally work via radiofrequency energy. During treatment, the target area is bombarded with radiofrequency waves. This causes the tiny molecules in tissue to vibrate, resulting in friction and heat. When fat is heated to about 46° Celcius and the temperature is sustained for 20 minutes or more, approximately 60% of the fat cells exposed to the energy are programmed for death. The process is called apoptosis, and it occurs painlessly and naturally. The fat cells that are destroyed are picked up by the lymphatic system and eliminated. They are gone for good. In our Louisville medical spa, we perform radiofrequency body contouring using the Exilis and Vanquish devices. One of the benefits of using heat is that some degree of tissue contraction may also occur, resulting in firmer, tighter skin.

CoolSculpting

The freezing method of fat-reduction is known as cryolipolysis, and CoolSculpting is the most well-known and reputable device that utilizes freezing temperature to contour the body. During CoolSculpting sessions, the patient has an applicator “attached” to their treatment area via suction. The fat that is drawn into the chamber cools within 5 to 10 minutes. The remainder of the treatment session sustains the target temperature that causes crystals to form in the targeted fat cells. Studies indicate that approximately 50% of the exposed fat undergoes apoptosis via cryolypolysis. Like radiofrequency treatments, CoolSculpting results in cell death and the removal of fat cells through the lymphatic system.

Chemical Dissolution

Years ago, doctors used a treatment called Lipodissolve to chemically disrupt the structure of fat cells. The broader use of chemicals like deoxycholic acid and phosphatidylcholine produced marginal results and tended to cause more discomfort than was worth it. Today, chemical fat dissolution is used in a much more refined manner. For the past few years, Kybella injections have achieved safe, comfortable, and gorgeous results in reducing submental fullness under the chin.

One of the primary differences between our non-surgical body contouring options and surgical treatments is that they require multiple sessions to achieve optimal results. Still, the final outcome is satisfying and can be long-lasting. To learn more or to schedule your body contouring consultation in our Louisville office, contact us at 502-425-5200.

Is There a “Best” Method of Nonsurgical Fat-Reduction?

As we go through life, many of us expect to see some bumps and bulges where we used to be much smoother. Before we notice these problems, we may believe they are related only to a significant change in weight. Once they appear, we realize there are much subtler nuances to the aging process. If your bulges and bumps haven’t been eliminated by your diet and exercise routine, now is a great time to switch things up. We’re happy to help. In our Louisville office, patients have options for nonsurgical fat reduction. The question we usually hear about this is “which is best?” Here, we compare two popular options: CoolSculpting and Exilis.

Freeze Fat with CoolSculpting

Many people have heard of CoolSculpting, the fat-freezing treatment that is super-hot at the moment. This popular treatment has been performed for many years and has helped millions of people get the shape they have wanted. The noninvasive procedure works by securing a localized area of fat between cooling panels. These panels are cooled to freezing temperatures that direct energy from both sides of the fatty deposit. In a short session that lasts just over half an hour, the target fat cells have been frozen. They form crystals inside that damage their outer membrane. As a result, the body flushes these cells to permanently reduce the number of fat cells in the treated area.

Patients who choose CoolSculpting do not require downtime to recover. They do not require anesthesia or have to follow post-treatment guidelines. Starting a few weeks after the first treatment, the shape begins to visibly change. Three or more treatment sessions may be needed in some cases.

Melt Fat with Exilis

Exilis is the FDA-cleared device that emits radiofrequency waves to target unwanted fat. Treatment sessions may last 30 to 90 minutes, during which panels sit on the skin to deliver thermal energy that heats subcutaneous fat cells. The built-in cooling mechanism works throughout the treatment to protect the epidermis and ensure that thermal energy permeates the skin to affect fat only. After an Exilis session, patients may resume normal activities, making sure to drink plenty of water to support the metabolism of fat. Because Exilis works through heat, patients may notice a skin-tightening effect that they wouldn’t get with CoolSculpting.

We love helping our patients achieve their goals because we know it enhances their self-esteem. If you are interested in reducing unwanted fat, come talk to us. Call 502-425-5200 to schedule a visit to our Louisville office.

There’s a Quicker Way to Tone Your Body

Looking good and feeling good go hand-in-hand regardless of our age. Part of looking our best is maintaining the body’s slim figure. However, even when we are at an ideal body weight for our frame, a lack of muscle tone can make us look less than ideal. Toning muscles has historically taken a considerable amount of effort. Things haven’t changed in terms of the value of exercise. What has changed is the speed at which certain muscle groups can be toned by incorporating sophisticated technology. In our Louisville practice, more patients are turning to EMSculpt to jump-start their future fitness.

EMSculpt is a type of non-invasive body contouring that differs from any other technique available at the moment. While many other technologies are used to reduce fat and tighten the skin, EMSculpt has been developed for muscle-tightening at the deepest levels.

What EMSculpt Is and What It Does

EMSculpt is an FDA-approved device that forces deep muscle contractions using High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) technology. The electromagnetic field created in the supramaximal layer of muscle tissue stimulates contractions that far exceed what one can achieve in the gym. This not only firms the muscles but increases the metabolism of fat cells in the treatment area. Fat-burning and muscle-toning occur simultaneously in a short, thirty-minute session.

Currently, EMSculpt can be conducted on the abdomen and buttocks. Treatment is well-tolerated by patients even though the contractions that occur are equivalent to approximately 20,000 crunches or squats. After treatment, muscles are expected to feel sore for a short time, similar to recovery from a good workout.

Benefits of EMSculpt include:

  • The FDA-approved device has a high rate of safety and efficacy.
  • Treatment is noninvasive. Energy is delivered via applicators that match the size of the treatment area. Applicators can sit on top of clothing.
  • Results can be long-lasting with either touch-up treatments or regular exercise.
  • Gradually occurring muscle tone looks completely natural because it is.

Now is a great time to give the body some TLC as well as some tough love. To learn more about EMSculpt, contact our Louisville office at 502-425-5200.

Is EMSCULPT the Answer You’ve Been Waiting For?

The topic of weight loss has been popular for decades. We’ve discussed which diets work and which don’t; what exercises are most effective and which are more like spinning our weight-loss wheels. Ultimately, all this talk has led to two things. The first is overwhelm and confusion. How do we really know which diet is right for us or how we will possibly “lose the weight?” The second is a misconception of what we’re really after in the end, which is to have a body shape that suits us. To improve shape, we’ve got to address muscle tone. To gain muscle, one once had to spend hours in the gym. For those in the Louisville area, muscle toning can take place in our comfortable medspa facility.

EMSCULPT is Changing the Body-Toning Game

It is very satisfying to sit at the forefront of plastic surgery and aesthetic medicine. Our position here provides us with the best opportunity to help our patients truly reach their goals. On the nonsurgical front, we do so with EMSCULPT. This ingenious device does what you would normally do in the gym, only better. While you lie comfortably on the treatment table, the EMSCULPT applicators move your muscles thousands of times more than you could do in several gym sessions.

EMSCULPT is a proven muscle-toning device that works by emitting high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM). This energy passes through the uppermost layers of skin and fatty tissue. It lands in the supramaximal layer of tissue, the muscle. The effect of contact with HIFEM is strong muscle contraction, as if you had performed a squat or abdominal crunch. In one treatment session, the muscle contractions performed under HIFEM energy equates to thousands of exercises. As a side effect of rapid, consistent contractions deep in the muscle, fat cells can also be destroyed.

What to Expect from EMSCULPT

The old adage about getting fit, “no pain, no gain,” does not apply to EMSCULPT treatments. Even with the intense muscle tightening that takes place, treatment is quite comfortable. At first, the effects of HIFEM on the muscle can feel strange. However, patients do not report the sensations as painful. What we do prepare patients to expect is post-treatment soreness. After all, they just went through a pretty strenuous workout.

Are you tired of working so hard to get the body you want? Does the idea of up to 16% more muscle mass sound good? We think so. To learn more about EMSCULPT, schedule a consultation at our Louisville office. Call 502-425-5200 for friendly service.

What to Expect from Your Tummy Tuck Procedure

Excessive fat of the abdominal area, sometimes combined with loose abdominal skin and laxity of abdominal muscles, can be a cause for frustration for many patients who find diet and exercise to be ineffective. This change in appearance is often caused by fluctuations in weight, pregnancies, or surgeries for weight loss. The most effective way to correct this problem is surgically, through a tummy tuck procedure. Here’s what you can expect from your surgery day and recovery.

The Procedure

In a traditional tummy tuck procedure, excessive skin around the abdomen is removed, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and liposuction is sometimes performed on the excess fat of the flanks, hips, and abdominal wall. This procedure is also known as abdominoplasty, and it is performed under general anesthesia. An incision is a necessary part of the procedure and, if there is a large amount of skin to be removed in a horizontal and vertical direction, then a ‘T’ shaped incision is made. Blood vessels are narrowed with the help of numbing medicines and epinephrine, combined to make a tumescent fluid. Surgeons also use pain managing injections like Exparel.

A no-drain tummy tuck procedure is the one in which drains are not required during the recovery period. Progressive tension sutures or TissueGlueâ are used for this purpose, as they dissolve with time. The advantage of this technique is that it diminishes the chances of seroma development so drains are not required. This technique is very popular because dealing with drains during recovery time can be very uncomfortable. Dr. Salzman is an expert in performing no-drain tummy tuck surgery.

The Recovery

The standard recovery time for tummy tuck procedure takes about 10 to 14 days. The Exparel injection given by anesthesia under ultrasound, (TAP Block) can last for up to 3 days, allowing movement and managing pain for a quicker recovery. Patients can usually return to their non-stressful work routine after two weeks; however, some patients who have physically-challenging jobs may require an additional couple weeks before they can feel fit enough to resume their work.

Consulting with Dr. Salzman before your surgery is the most important step of your procedure process because the suitability for every individual is different. Dr. Salzman can also make sure you’re aware of the specific risks and factors involved with a tummy tuck procedure and plan the best surgical technique for you. Why Choose Breast Revision?

Despite yours and your plastic surgeon’s best efforts, sometimes complications still happen. This can happen after a breast augmentation procedure, even though breast augmentations are some of the most popular and often-performed plastic surgeries. Although the chances of breast implant surgery going wrong are very low, in very sparse percentages it does go wrong. During a breast revision surgery, a new or different type or size of implant is surgically-placed with correction to the breasts if needed.

Why Choose Breast Revision Surgery?

Dr. Salzman is an expert consultant for breast revision candidates and has plenty of experience in improving the results of an already-completed breast augmentation surgery. A few of the reasons for which people often go for breast revision include:

Complication

Although your plastic surgeon may be an expert breast surgeon, the chance of complication is never zero. Your body may respond in unpredictable ways and cause capsular contracture, which is the most common form of complication from implant surgery. This occurs when scar tissue forms around the implant and results in a hard shell encapsulating the breast implant. This can cause it to shift out of place or migrate around the breast. Rotation of the implant or rupture are also common reasons for undergoing breast revision.

Unfavorable Results

Technology has come a long way, but it can still be difficult to judge how your final results will look. This can change over time, with the implants eventually becoming unfavorable due to the way your body changes. You may even realize that your implants are too small or too large as your results become apparent, or that you prefer a different shape. In any case, Dr. Salzman can help you select a better-suited implant or treatment plan during a breast revision consultation.

New Technology

Because breast implants are so popular, the technology is constantly developing, meaning new implants may be available at any point in the future. Sometimes, new and better implants come along that may be better suited for your goals and anatomy, in which case they can be swapped out during a breast revision.

Scheduling A Consultation

Whatever your reason for opting for breast revision, you can achieve a second chance at your cosmetic goals. Dr. Salzman can help you plan your ideal procedure during a consultation at our Louisville office. To schedule a consultation, contact our office by calling or filling out our online form.

Tummy Tuck or Mini Tummy Tuck: Which Is Best for Me?

Most people have a little extra baggage around their middle and most people would probably, given the opportunity, would opt to get rid of it. Fortunately, there’s a tummy tuck to fit your unique needs! If you’re looking for a surgical solution, a tummy tuck is a great way to slim and restore the abdominal area, and you’ve got a couple options. Here’s what you should know about these two types of tummy tucks as you plan your consultation.

Traditional tummy tuck

The traditional tummy tuck is a tried and true method to overhaul the stomach area. This technique uses incisions to gain access to the underlying fat and muscles which can be repositioned and tightened with sutures. This has even been shown to have medical benefits for postpartum women who suffer from back pain or urinary incontinence because of weak abdominal muscles. After this is accomplished, any extra, saggy skin can be removed before the skin is pulled down and closed. Sometimes, liposuction can be used along with this technique to remove any stubborn fat in the area.

Mini tummy tuck

Although this technique is called ‘mini’, it can still be just as effective for patients looking for results below the belly button. The same technique as a traditional tummy tuck applies, but the mini tummy tuck is not as invasive and usually requires less downtime. Dr. Salzman can also perform liposuction on the lower body and hips during this procedure, meaning it’s a great option for overall rejuvenation of the lower body if your stomach area is otherwise satisfactory.

Which is best for me?

The best way to determine which tummy tuck is best for you is through a consultation with Dr. Salzman, where you can discuss what you would like the change and how you want it to look. However, a good way to determine which would benefit you most is through location— if you have stubborn fat and excess skin below the belly button, a mini tummy tuck can help. If the fat and loose skin extend higher, a traditional tummy tuck may be required. Dr. Salzman can also recommend whether you might benefit from just liposuction or even a non-surgical fat reduction procedure!

To schedule your consultation with Dr. Salzman and see what options are available to you, contact our office or fill out our online form. We serve patients looking for great results in the Louisville and surrounding areas.

Why Choose Emsculpt®?

There are a lot of options when it comes to non-surgical body sculpting because many patients are finding great results. Emsculpt is the latest technology in this category to hit the market, but you should know what makes it different from other options like CoolSculpting® or Vanquish™, and why you should be sure to ask about it at your body sculpting consultation.

Build muscle while you lose fat

Although many other body sculpting treatments are effective at reducing stubborn fat in areas of the body that are prone to it, Emsculpt has an added benefit. This procedure uses electromagnetic energy to induce contractions in the muscle (similar to a workout) beyond what the muscle can achieve on its own. This not only burns fat but also forces the muscle to remodel itself to adapt to the contraction. With a few treatment sessions, you’ll notice an improvement in overall muscle tone and contours.

Augment your diet and exercise results

Emsculpt is a great option if you’re already working on slimming down and achieving the body you’ve always wanted because it can speed up your results and give you the progress you’ve been looking for. Emsculpt can also be a great way to jumpstart a new diet and exercise regimen if you’re looking to improve your body’s tone if it’s already at or near your ideal weight. You can still work towards your great results without downtime or recovery from a surgical procedure.

Use it along with other body sculpting procedures

Fortunately, you’ve got plenty of options when it comes to pairing your Emsculpt treatments with another non-surgical body sculpting procedure. Whether it’s CoolSculpting, Vanquish, or Exilis, you can plan your treatment plan with the help of our expert aestheticians to get the best results from these treatments. Although treatments like CoolSculpting might be spaced further apart than Emsculpt, you’ll find great results over a wider amount of time as you continue your diet and exercise regimen.

We’re proud to offer Emsculpt as an effective option for patients looking to achieve the body they’ve worked hard for. To learn more about this new technology, contact our office and schedule a consultation with our expert aesthetic staff who can begin planning the right body sculpting treatment plan for you.

Vanquish™ is Your Liposuction Alternative

If you’ve been looking at your options for fat reduction, then you know that there is a dizzying selection of options. However, there’s no need to undergo a surgical, invasive procedure if you don’t want or are unable to. There are many different non-invasive fat reduction techniques and Vanquish might be the solution for you.

Vanquish Destroys Fat Cells Without the Hassle

While some non-invasive fat removal treatments require a handpiece or technology applied to the skin, Vanquish takes it one step further and requires no contact. It works by applying focused, multipolar radio-frequency transmitters to the fatty areas, which heats the fat cells. This causes them to release their fatty contents, which are gradually absorbed by the body as waste. This means your results only get better over time.

Vanquish Produces Effective Stomach Fat Removal

Vanquish is most effective in the fatty areas around the stomach, where most people carry a little extra fat. The best candidates for Vanquish are those that are at or near their ideal body mass index— more drastic results can require a minimally-invasive procedure like Liposuction or its laser-assisted variants. The best way to determine which procedure is best for you is through a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon in Louisville.

Vanquish Requires a Quick and Easy Treatment Session

Although the treatment might sound painful or high-tech, Vanquish treatments can be very relaxing and tolerable. Patients usually lay on a table while the RF transmitters go to work on stomach fat, causing a warming sensation which can be adjusted if it becomes too hot. These sessions are usually grouped together in a series of 4 to 6, spaced a week or two apart. You can also speak to your aesthetician about combining Vanquish with non-invasive skin-tightening options.

To learn more about Vanquish and create your treatment plan, contact our office and schedule your consultation, during which you can discuss your options with Vanquish and our other laser treatments.

EMSculpt®: Your Complete Body Sculpting Solution

If you’ve heard of non-invasive fat removal or have even undergone a few treatments, then you should know about EMSculpt. This groundbreaking procedure can be your next step or your finishing touch as the only non-invasive fat removal procedure that also builds muscle at the same time. Interested in EMSculpt? Here’s what you should know.

How Does it Work?

This procedure uses High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic technology to induce muscle contractions beyond what the body can achieve on its own. This causes the muscles to remodel their structure by building mass and burning fat. This is different from other body sculpting procedures that might use heat or cooling to destroy fat cells without the benefit of muscle toning. EMSculpt can also be used as a non-invasive butt lift technique.

Who is a Candidate?

Unlike other body sculpting procedures, EMSculpt exists for patients interested in putting the finishing touch on their body. If you’re working hard to slim down and want to see more definition or muscle tone, EMSculpt can help you get there. Generally, patients with less than an inch of pinchable fat find best results with EMSculpt.

What is the Treatment Like?

Although it might sound extreme, EMSculpt is not painful and instead feels like an intense workout, although you can rest and relax while the treatment happens— which only requires a 30-minute session to be effective. These are usually spaced 2-3 days apart to allow the body time to rest and recover. This treatment can even be tailored to your specific needs and can be repeated as many times as necessary.

What About Recovery and Results?

Because EMSculpt is non-invasive, there’s no downtime like a surgical procedure would require. That means you can get right back to your busy schedule and don’t need to prepare or take any post-care steps. Most patients see and feel real results right after treatment, with their results improving over the course of a few weeks after.

If you’re interested in learning more about EMSculpt and want to schedule your consultation, contact our office and speak with our skilled and experienced aestheticians to create your EMSculpt treatment plan.
