Liposuction Prep Tips You Want to Know

iStock 175203396 Liposuction is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures of our time. It is effective, safe, and relatively convenient due to minimal downtime. Most of all, it can shape the body beautifully and more quickly than pretty much any other method. Once you have selected your surgeon and put your liposuction procedure on the books, there is very little left to do other than feel the excitement of your journey. Very little, but not nothing. Here, we offer some liposuction prep tips you may find helpful.

How to Physically Prepare for Liposuction

The physical preparation for plastic surgery is necessary for two things. One is to reduce surgical risks and the other is to give the body all that it could need for a healthy, successful recovery. To achieve both of these objectives, you may want to do the following:

  • Eat healthy. We assume that our liposuction patients are already comfortable with their eating habits. They often come to see us after they’ve already lost weight or when they are struggling with a few pounds that have lingered. That said, their eating habits often involve calorie restriction. When we say to eat healthy before surgery, our focus is not weight loss or management but physical energy. To heal well, the body relies on nutrients from fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Eat these and your body will be well-prepared for surgery.
  • Have an exercise plan. Again, we’re going a little outside the box here. You may already exercise several days a week. You’re getting liposuction because your current plan isn’t getting you where you want to be. Once you have liposuction, exercise will continue to be paramount to your long-term body shape. Our tip is to think about what you really like to do physically. You may be throwing around weights when what might make you feel even better is to stretch out on a yoga mat or hit a dancefloor. Because exercise is an essential part of life, find what you like.

How to Mentally Prepare for Liposuction

Mental preparation is more important for plastic surgery patients than they often think. During recovery, however brief, there is a chance of having doubts, guilt, or other roller-coaster feelings. To navigate, you may want to:

  • Make your goal visible to you. While sleeping more and moving less, it can feel good to see your motivating goal every day. Is it a bikini? That little black dress? Whatever you envision in your head, put it on paper or on a clothes hanger. Seeing your reason for having liposuction can boost your resilience during recovery when you may not feel your best yet.
  • Get connected. You may be more tired for a few days after surgery and you may feel a little blue, even. This is when your connections can come to the rescue. Whether or not it’s company you might want, it is beneficial to gather some “support staff” who can cook a few meals, drive the kids where they need to go, and walk or feed pets.

Liposuction can be extremely gratifying so long as you are prepared. To consult with Dr. Salzman about this procedure, contact us at  502-425-5200.

Which Type of Liposuction is Right for Me?

As plastic surgery has become more commonplace over the years, we have seen a rapid advancement in various procedures. According to annual statistics in plastic surgery, liposuction is one of the most popular procedures available. In general, liposuction is a method of removing stubborn fat cells from one or more areas of the body. More specifically, though, there are a few different liposuction techniques that can be utilized to accomplish this goal. Here, we discuss what those are.

Tumescent, Power-Assisted Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction involves the insertion of a diluted solution of adrenaline and local anesthetic into the surgical area. This solution is administered through tiny incisions and works within a few minutes to numb the nerve endings between the skin and the layer of fatty tissue beneath. Tumescent fluid also expands tissue, making it easier to remove fat cells. All liposuction procedures involve the use of tumescent fluid. This is what anesthetizes the area and constricts blood vessels to reduce bleeding.

Dr. Salzman uses a power-assisted tube that drives the motion of the fat-removing cannula, eliminating the back-and-forth motions that have commonly been used in the past. This type of liposuction is often performed on the thighs, hips, flanks, and abdomen.

Laser-Assisted Liposuction

Laser-assisted liposuction is used for small to moderately-sized areas of localized fat deposits. Common areas include the legs, back, abdomen, arms, and neck. After numbing the treatment area with tumescent fluid, Dr. Salzman inserts a small laser probe into the layer of fat beneath the skin. The laser heats fatty tissue, disrupting cells for a smooth removal process. A syringe is used to extract softened fat cells. The laser is then reinserted and delivers a different wavelength of energy to tighten the skin.

Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (VASER)

Like laser-assisted liposuction, VASER liposuction breaks up fatty tissue to make the extraction process gentler and more efficient. One of the reasons VASER liposuction may be selected over laser-assisted liposuction is that ultrasound energy does not destroy fat cells. The cells remain viable, so they can be used for fat transfer to another part of the body.

High-Definition Liposuction

High-definition liposuction is a specialized technique that is performed by surgeons with a great deal of experience conducting liposuction procedures. The intention of high-definition liposuction is to carve out muscular definition in the torso through the superficial aspiration of fatty tissue. To accentuate the sculpted abdomen, the appearance of the abdominal muscles may be augmented with fat grafting.

There are various liposuction techniques because each patient has a unique constitution and goals they wish to achieve. Dr. Salzman is familiar with the nuances of each form of liposuction and relies on years of experience when recommending treatments for our patients. Liposuction – what to expect?

Come summer everybody wants to show off their best figure in a swimsuit. However, it is not always easy to achieve a toned appearance simply with dieting and exercising. Liposuction is a safe and effective treatment to recontour your body as excess fat is suctioned away.

What is the procedure like?

Liposculpture procedures at Salzman MD are done under a laryngeal mask anesthetic and a tumescent local that numbs the area as well as makes the blood vessels smaller so as to limit any bruising. The laryngeal mask allows us to give you just the right amount of anesthesia that can keep you asleep during the procedure and still wake up quickly without any hangover effects of anesthesia.

During every liposuction procedure with us, a dilute solution of local anesthesia and adrenaline is placed around the area through tiny incisions. A gentle power assisted suction tube removes the fat cells and fat contained in it. This is the Vaser liposuction technique. It is easier on the patient and also leads to fewer bruises as well as faster recovery. For a smaller area of treatment, microcannulas are used which are like a syringe.

What does getting liposuction feel like?

The areas that have been treated remain swollen and sore for a few days. For most patients, it feels like getting a rigorous workout. You will be required to wear a compression garment for about 2 weeks, and this will help with the healing and keeping the swelling to a minimum. Any bruising from the treatment will last for about 10 to 14 days. You will see your results improving over the next 5 to 6 months as the skin keeps contracting and taking up the slack of the removed fat.

The best liposuction technique

There are several body parts that can be addressed with the help of the liposuction procedure. Depending on your individual requirements, the body part to be treated and your desired results, there are different kinds of liposuction techniques and treatments we offer:

  • Vaser liposuction – this is the gentlest technique. These use Tumescent Resonance Ultrasound followed by Fat Extraction. Dr. Salzman uses the 3D Vectra system during your consultation to stimulate how you look after the surgery. Those who are near their ideal weight will get the best results from this procedure. It is effective for larger areas and the most commonly treated areas include the abdomen, hips, thighs, back, arms, calves, and chest.
  • LiteShape laser liposuction – it is best for those who have small to moderate localized fat deposits which are resistant to exercise and dieting. Patients who need a tummy tuck make for good candidates for the LiteShape procedure. Some of the commonly treated areas include the neck, abdomen, arms, legs, and back.
  • Lipodissolve – This is an injectable made with a combination of several agents. Very tiny amounts of this are injected in the area to be treated at about half an inch gap to melt the fat to effectively thin out the fat layer directly beneath your skin. Some of the common areas are the neck, back, arm, and lower abdomen. This treatment works slowly and hence several treatments spaced at 4 to 6 weeks are required for achieving optimal results.

Liposuction is a great way to achieve a toned and slimmer appearance with lesser downtime and faster healing than a surgery. In the hands of an experienced surgeon like Dr. Salzman, you can achieve the most stunning results with the best combination of techniques.

Getting a Flatter Abdomen: Why A Tummy Tuck is The Best Option

Fat cells can accumulate rather rapidly in certain areas of the body, such as the abdominal region. This can be frustrating to deal with, especially after experiencing childbirth. There are so many different ways to get rid of excess fat. Exercising and a healthy diet are great options, but they can’t always get rid of all the excess fat. Thankfully, there are multiple cosmetic procedures that address this problem. A few of the most popular procedures that address a flabby stomach are liposuction, body lifts, and a tummy tuck. All of these procedures can help you achieve a flatter stomach in different ways.

What Are the Procedures?

The different procedures performed at our office are all to help you in feeling more confident, but what do they entail?

This procedure is done by using a small cannula, which is inserted through small incisions, to suction out the fat with a surgical vacuum. This type of procedure is good for smaller amounts of fat and doesn’t usually help with large amounts of loose skin. It is often paired with a tummy tuck procedure to address these issues.

Body Lift

A body lift is a surgical procedure that helps to remove excess skin and fat around the abdominal region, including the hips and thighs. It is more commonly done on patients with massive weight loss. It is a more extensive procedure, so it often has more recovery time than liposuction or a tummy tuck procedure.

Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic surgery. There are multiple options for a tummy tuck including mini, full, and extended. The tummy tuck is a surgical procedure done under anesthesia that helps to get rid of excess skin and some fat cells, as well as tighten any weakened abdominal muscles. By making discreet incisions around the bikini line, the surgeon can then remove the excess skin on the stomach, forming it to contour to your natural body. It helps to create a firmer, smooth abdomen and can help in overall body contouring.

How to Choose?

All of these different cosmetic procedures help achieve a flatter stomach differently. If you are self-conscious about your abdominal region due to excess skin and fat, then a tummy tuck would be most helpful. Although liposuction is a mildly invasive procedure, it cannot address loose skin on the abdomen the way a tummy tuck can. A body lift can be helpful as well, as it is a procedure that addresses fat and skin excess all the way around the waist. The tummy tuck is one of the top five cosmetic procedures performed in 2017 and is performed on around 120,000 people per year. It has given proven results and is a long-term solution for reconstructing your abdomen to be firmer, smoother, and smaller.

What to Expect from Your Tummy Tuck Procedure

Excessive fat of the abdominal area, sometimes combined with loose abdominal skin and laxity of abdominal muscles, can be a cause for frustration for many patients who find diet and exercise to be ineffective. This change in appearance is often caused by fluctuations in weight, pregnancies, or surgeries for weight loss. The most effective way to correct this problem is surgically, through a tummy tuck procedure. Here’s what you can expect from your surgery day and recovery.

The Procedure

In a traditional tummy tuck procedure, excessive skin around the abdomen is removed, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and liposuction is sometimes performed on the excess fat of the flanks, hips, and abdominal wall. This procedure is also known as abdominoplasty, and it is performed under general anesthesia. An incision is a necessary part of the procedure and, if there is a large amount of skin to be removed in a horizontal and vertical direction, then a ‘T’ shaped incision is made. Blood vessels are narrowed with the help of numbing medicines and epinephrine, combined to make a tumescent fluid. Surgeons also use pain managing injections like Exparel.

A no-drain tummy tuck procedure is the one in which drains are not required during the recovery period. Progressive tension sutures or TissueGlueâ are used for this purpose, as they dissolve with time. The advantage of this technique is that it diminishes the chances of seroma development so drains are not required. This technique is very popular because dealing with drains during recovery time can be very uncomfortable. Dr. Salzman is an expert in performing no-drain tummy tuck surgery.

The Recovery

The standard recovery time for tummy tuck procedure takes about 10 to 14 days. The Exparel injection given by anesthesia under ultrasound, (TAP Block) can last for up to 3 days, allowing movement and managing pain for a quicker recovery. Patients can usually return to their non-stressful work routine after two weeks; however, some patients who have physically-challenging jobs may require an additional couple weeks before they can feel fit enough to resume their work.

Consulting with Dr. Salzman before your surgery is the most important step of your procedure process because the suitability for every individual is different. Dr. Salzman can also make sure you’re aware of the specific risks and factors involved with a tummy tuck procedure and plan the best surgical technique for you. Why Choose Emsculpt®?

There are a lot of options when it comes to non-surgical body sculpting because many patients are finding great results. Emsculpt is the latest technology in this category to hit the market, but you should know what makes it different from other options like CoolSculpting® or Vanquish™, and why you should be sure to ask about it at your body sculpting consultation.

Build muscle while you lose fat

Although many other body sculpting treatments are effective at reducing stubborn fat in areas of the body that are prone to it, Emsculpt has an added benefit. This procedure uses electromagnetic energy to induce contractions in the muscle (similar to a workout) beyond what the muscle can achieve on its own. This not only burns fat but also forces the muscle to remodel itself to adapt to the contraction. With a few treatment sessions, you’ll notice an improvement in overall muscle tone and contours.

Augment your diet and exercise results

Emsculpt is a great option if you’re already working on slimming down and achieving the body you’ve always wanted because it can speed up your results and give you the progress you’ve been looking for. Emsculpt can also be a great way to jumpstart a new diet and exercise regimen if you’re looking to improve your body’s tone if it’s already at or near your ideal weight. You can still work towards your great results without downtime or recovery from a surgical procedure.

Use it along with other body sculpting procedures

Fortunately, you’ve got plenty of options when it comes to pairing your Emsculpt treatments with another non-surgical body sculpting procedure. Whether it’s CoolSculpting, Vanquish, or Exilis, you can plan your treatment plan with the help of our expert aestheticians to get the best results from these treatments. Although treatments like CoolSculpting might be spaced further apart than Emsculpt, you’ll find great results over a wider amount of time as you continue your diet and exercise regimen.

We’re proud to offer Emsculpt as an effective option for patients looking to achieve the body they’ve worked hard for. To learn more about this new technology, contact our office and schedule a consultation with our expert aesthetic staff who can begin planning the right body sculpting treatment plan for you.

Moms, It’s Time for Your Makeover

Spring is the time of year for flowers, rain showers, and celebrating what makes mommies great. the Moms make a lot of sacrifices, but feeling great in their body shouldn’t be one of them. Many women experience pregnancy and childbirth but feel resigned to the toll that it can take on their body. A mommy makeover is a set of procedures that can restore and rejuvenate the body to its pre-pregnancy state. Here are some of the things that can be included in your customized treatment.

The breasts play an important part in pregnancy and nursing, but they can, unfortunately, change permanently in shape, size, and position during the process. Many women find their breasts have grown to an uncomfortable size or become stretched out and saggy. A mommy makeover can include a breast procedure to lift, reduce, or augment the breasts to restore them to their natural shape. It can sometimes even be performed with a combination of two techniques, like a reduction and lift. Dr. Salzman can help you plan your treatment techniques to ensure you get the breasts you want.

Perhaps the most affected area during pregnancy and childbirth is the stomach, which can be left with excess skin or pockets of fat due to the way the female body stores fat during pregnancy. Diet and exercise sometimes aren’t enough, so a tummy tuck can restore a slim, contoured abdomen. Many women also struggle with loss of muscle tone in the abdomen, which can be corrected by tightening and suturing the abdominal muscles, which is commonly practiced during the procedure. These can become stretched and ineffective during childbirth and are unable to be restored through exercise.

Although the breasts and stomach are the two most commonly treated areas, many women opt for additional procedures to add the finishing touches to their new body. Whether it’s additional liposuction, fat transfer, vaginal rejuvenation, facial procedures, or non-surgical rejuvenation techniques, it can be a great way to feel like a new, better you.

There’s A Fat Removal Procedure For You

While liposuction changed the plastic surgery procedure game when it first emerged as an effective fat removal technique, it seems like there are now a vast amount of liposuction and fat removal options on the market. This can be overwhelming if you’re struggling to lose pockets of fat and don’t know where to start. But don’t worry— whether it’s invasive, non-invasive, or somewhere in between, there’s a fat removal or liposuction option out there to suit your problem areas and aesthetic goals.

Traditional Liposuction

Why mess with a good thing? Traditional liposuction still works to effectively remove fat from areas that can be difficult to tone through diet and exercise. Although it’s performed under anesthesia and requires downtime, this technique can be most beneficial to patients with a higher amount of fat to be removed. This procedure also offers the great potential for fat transfer procedures, like a Brazilian Butt Lift.

Vaser Liposuction

This procedure adds an extra step to traditional liposuction in order to create an effective, gentler, and less-invasive procedure. It uses ultrasound energy that “shakes” the individual cells loose, optimizing them for removal with a smaller cannula than the kind used in a traditional procedure. This means less bruising, easier fat removal, and an added benefit of skin tightening all at once. This fat has also been shown to be excellent for fat grafting to face, body and breast.  Vaser Liposuction surgery is constantly growing in popularity.

Liteshape™ Laser Liposuction

Liteshape laser liposuction procedure also has the benefit of skin tightening, and is most common for post-pregnancy patients looking to get rid of small to moderate pockets of fat with loose skin overlying. This procedure uses a handheld laser to melt fat that is then removed through a cannula. Another laser is then applied at a customized wavelength that effectively tightens the surrounding skin. This procedure is done under a local anesthetic with either oral sedation or nitrous oxide (laughing gas).  One requires multiple treatments in order to get best results, usually spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Arguably becoming one of the most popular non-invasive fat removal techniques currently available, CoolSculpting uses an external applicator that essentially freezes fat cells so that they slowly die over several months and are absorbed into the body through normal metabolic pathways.

Radio Frequency Treatments

Radio waves might not be the first thing you associate with fat removal, but both Exilis and Vanquish™ use monopolar and multipolar radio frequencies (radio waves) respectively to create heat that causes the fat deposits within the cells to be released. These are both highly-effective, non-invasive, and even relaxing procedures that give great fat removal and skin tightening results.

Kybella is an injectable form a natural bile salt used in the body to dissolve fat in the digestive tract. It can be injected into small areas such as the neck or knees to slowly melt the fat in that area. A sequence of treatments a month to 6 weeks apart are usually necessary.

It might still seem like there are an overwhelming amount of fat removal techniques to choose from, but a consultation with Dr. Salzman can help you determine the best treatment plan for your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals. Contact our office at 502-425-5200 to get started.

New Ultra Definition Liposuction

Recently we have begun to offer to our patients at the Salzman Institute of Cosmetic Surgery a new method of liposuction that advances the state of the art of simply de-bulking areas of extra fat to actually sculpting out the underlying muscle shapes. It’s called Ultra Definition Liposuction and it entails using the ultrasound of our Vaser to melt the larger areas of fat into smaller particles that can then be removed with a power liposuction device. Some of the fat is saved and processed in such a way as to remove all but the fat cells that would survive the transfer process. Additional bulk can then be added by re-injecting some of this fat to create the surface enhancement of the underlying muscle definition. In men, this commonly would enhance the pectoralis or chest muscle and demonstrate the “6 pack” of the abdominal muscles. By thinning the fatty layer over the chest wall outside of the pectoralis muscle and then adding fat to the top of the muscle a very musculature physique can me created. In women, the same principals are use to define the abdomen, hips and arms.

The time to accomplish this Ultra Definition Liposuction takes longer in the operating room and the healing process can be a little longer as well.

Patients closer to their ideal body weight are the best candidates. Costs are higher than that for traditional liposuction but this new method gives amazingly shaped results.
